I would like to find some reference books or downloadable articles on sprayed-on cancels, especially for their first two years of usage.

Hi,
Do a search using http://www.hamiltonphilatelic.org/presentations/postmarks.pdf whereby they describe all known types of cancels including the ones which were sprayed on.

Hi Doug

Another source of info is from http://www.postmarks.org/resources/intro.php but if you do a Google search and enter "sprayed on postage stamp cancellation marks" you end up with a minefield of info.

In the UK these are known as "ink jet". That may be a technical term which could apply to US cancels as well. Try Google.
