Hi Kelly;
I just happen to have the Scott's Belgium & Colonies Specialized. I always kinda liked those colorful issues too, especially the engraved ones. And now that I have the specialized, instead of the Blue International, I can house them all!!
I think machins are okay and look really nice in my album, but I don't go crazy over them like some do. I think that people go bonkers over the machins for a couple good reasons. For one, I think that the portrait of Elizabeth II is the most beautiful Queen's portrait of all time, including Victoria's pony tail. Second of all there are gazillions of varieties to be found, and this means you will never be bored, because you will always be trying to hit that elusive high note.
I recently found myself sorting a huge pile of them 8 months ago. Then I found an MH16a, color missing error. A used one sold on FeeBay 6 months ago for $260+. More recently I was sorting some machins to add to approvals. I had half a dozen or so MH22s lined up to pick the nicest cancels. One of them stood out as way too big. It was ½mm too all, or 22mm instead of 21½!! This may not sound like a lot, but it is.
After measuring several dozen of them I realized that they are held to very close tolerances, of .002"-.004". I know how to measure with extreme precision from my engineering background. This oversize example was ½mm or .020" or five to ten times the normal variation.
I started a thread on here to ask for advice from advanced machin collectors, and they too are aware of some over-sized examples. And the mystery goes on.
Happy Stamping

I'd love to one day be able to create a "railway" line using some of my Belgian rail stamps. Kind of a fun way to create an album
