United States/Covers & Postmarks : US Rate Question - Registered Air Mail from Puerto Rico on 09/13/1983
Author Postings smauggie 05 May 2014 10:02:08am
I get 40 cents for Airmail, $3.30 for registration with insurance and possible $0.70 for return receipt (though I see no markings related to return receipt)?
That doesn't account for the extra four cents paid though . . .
Thanks for any help.

I think i have your rates....
While inscribed AIR MAIL and while using an old air mail stamp, Air Mail no longer existed, so we go to regular first class.
20c for 1 ounce and 17c for each of next two ounces totals 54c, leaving $3.90, which is the rate for insurance for $500 to $1,000.
registry rate in effect 3.22.81 to 2.17.85; first class rate in effect 11.1.81 to 2.17.85
There's no RRR on this.
pretty nice piece, properly paid.
David

Figuring out the rates on these high-value covers is a bit like playing sudoku.
I should post a pic of the back for those backstamp fanciers.

The Jamaica, NY transit marking is quite interesting.
It turns out the sender and recipient were both lawyers, which explains the triple-weight rate (all that paperwork).

At a nice priceup, too!
The weren't used for very long, I don't think (though I have been known to be quite wrong).

Putting together a complete set of these registry labels with letters A-Z is a real good challenge.

Amos/Scott added them to the 2014 Specialized Catalog of US Stamps and Covers (which I will probably not have a copy of for a few years yet.
