Hello SOR Members,

Steve Swain has just posted a new article on the site – The MAILOMAT – Self-Service Postage Technology. This is a great one for U.S. postal history buffs – and anyone fascinated by the byways of postal technology history. There must be a proper term…

The article introduces us to the Pitney Bowes Mailomat, “a state-of-the-art, self-service, coin-operated postage meter machine for public use” first placed into service in New York City on May 17, 1939. As we’ve come to expect from Steve, the article has some priceless illustrations of the Mailomat in action and an analysis of some interesting commemorative covers.

Thanks to Steve for another great contribution!

Ralph

re: The MAILOMAT – (new article)

It is a fine article.

I love the Mailomat. Here are my Mailomat items from my US Metered Stamp collection.

Here is a postcard from the Mailomat in NYC.
