I got a number of nice stamps from Newfoundland recently and for two of them I need some help.
They are either Scott/unitrade # 51 or 52 but I am uncertain whether they are "umber brown" or "violet brown". The picture in my Unitrade suggests the latter. Can anyone assist in this colour naming game?Image Not Found

re: newfoundland #51 or #52?

Jansimon,
See if you can find another stamp in Newfi or even Canada to compare it with. I don't really see any resemblance to either stamp shown in my Unitrade, but of course, the catalogue was printed 120 years after the stamps were so I don't think the catalogue is that good of a comparison to use. Isn't this type of quandary just what makes stamp collecting so much fun.

Hi Jansimon, according to your scan, the first one is more regular brown, the second one seem to be a little bit more redish... i think the first is umber brown, the other one could be the violet brown.... I think....

They are both #51. There is no violet in either of them. The illustrations in Unitrade leave much to be desired, on many stamps, not just this one.

Jan-Simon:

I have both of these stamps and I agree with Roy, yours are both Scott 51.
The colour variations of Newfoundland stamps are infuriatingly confusing
- speak to Patches - and I would be reluctant to bet money on them.

Although I am colour blind ("colour defective" in politically-correct speak)
I do see distinctions in colours. My 51 and 52 need a close inspection to see
the colour distinction.

Stamporama's definitive authority on colour is (inarguably) Rhinelander
and you might wish to run this by him.

You are not obliged to agree with my judgement.

Jan-Simon: After comparing your stamps to my Walsh BNA catalogue, I would say your stamps are definitely umber brown. You can download a pdf of that publication and if you are serious about Newfoundland, I highly recommend it. I believe it cost me about $28.

re: newfoundland #51 or #52?

Thanks all, for your helpful remarks.
I already anticipated these stamps to be #51 as they are the cheapest variety, but one does not stop hoping, right? ;-)
The same batch also contained nrs. 28, 29, 31, 35 (I think), 39, 49, 56 and perhaps also 57 and 58, so I am very pleased with it, even when there is no 52 to be found Happy
