re: Opinion on this Early Stamp

Hi Clayton, looks like Scott 26, which, according to my 2001 Scott, is a $5 stamp. My ID could be wrong; but, if correct, it's not a rare stamp and the condition is poor enough to qualify as no better than a space filler. Centering is OK for the issue, but the poorly repaired tear and the numerous pulled perfs hurt its value.

Was the stamp ID'd by the seller; and is it 26 or something else?

Most importantly, what attracted you to the stamp?

i'll be interested in what others have to say and your thoughts, too, Clayton.

Not Sure why I bought it, Seriously. I keep telling everyone, my buying depends on what mood I'm in. I wasn't intentionally looking for this early stamp or any other early stamps, I just happened across it on ebay and bid. Its been quite a while since I bought an "early" stamp, since its not my main are of collecting. The purchase I guess could have stemmed from the fact that I was recently taking a look at the early stamps i do have, (early for me)Now Mystic sales this in Mint, for $110. A used one for 12.50 and a used one with flaws for 7.50

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but that Stamp is hosed. It has a sealed tear and a few pulled perfs that are more along the line of divots that go into the design. So basically the catalog number is not of importance due to condition,it is a Scott 26.

Clayton - I would agree. I have a ton of these and I think all in better condition. Did not know you were looking for one. They are really common. I'll send you a nice one.

But I wasn't looking for one. But now I have to have one. lol. This is what happened when I wake up at 4am and have barely made it halfway through my first cup of coffee, you know, kind of like mixing alcohol and infomercials on late night tv.

re: Opinion on this Early Stamp

Clayton, in another thread, we have been discussing space fillers, and this qualifies as one. People talk about how to value them: if memory serves, it was high of 20% to 2 or 3%, with many indicating that they would throw it out; and others saying they'd keep it until a better copy arrives.

I mention this because ID'g it as space filler (SF) should help you value it, even if you use Mystic's pricing. So, if it's offered at $12., a SF should command between $1 and $2.

My catalogue is too old to be of much help, but a dozen years ago it was valued at $5 in used, sound condition.

So, I think the lesson here is to have a plan. Still don't know what you paid for it; care to share?

Showed it beneath the pictures, but $3.38 w/ 0 shipping and I would have never notice the repaired tear (it just looked like part of old hinge, but after using my Mag Light, I can see whats going on., but $3.38 is what I paid.

thanks Clayton, yes, I missed that, even after looking several times. See, things ARE easy to miss.

$3 is no bargain, but given the other prices you were quoting, it's fine. And a great lesson was had for $3.

Clayton - I have as better deal. A replacement is on the way with my compliments. It is used, but is VF and I think anyone would be proud to display it in their album. I won't miss it, I have many of them. Enjoy - Dan

You might want to post an image with the 2 side by side when you get it.

Hi Clayton,
I know exactly where you are coming from with this purchase. Many a time I have purchased a bunch of stamps because they seem interesting at the time and then wonder what I had in mind a week later when they arrive. My wife suggests that in those situations I may have been assisted by buyers lubricant. Winking

..."buyers' lubricant"? Is that a product one purchases in an adults-only boutique?

I would like to add that this is exactly how we learn. I have bought many things, learned about them, and opted not to buy more.
