Son of a stamp collector! 20 Jul 2013 03:12:33pm | This is one of my most treasured pieces of Dad's collection.
The chances of me having this piece today would be nil if things hadn't fallen together perfectly.
1st, the plane had to crash... (Okay, not good, but it had to happen.)
2nd, the letter, a normally worthless piece of "junk mail" had to be addressed to my grandfather.
3rd, Dad had to be a lifelong stamp collector, and his entire family had to care enough to know this was something he might like.
Without all this, this waterlogged letter would have been in the trash long ago.
My grandparents recieved this letter in the mailbox some time later, and saved it for my father, who was out of country, because they thought it might be something a stamp collector would like.
National Airlines Flight #193: May 8th, 1978, crashed into Escambia Bay.
3 fatalities, and several critical injuries.
It always struck me as ironic that it wasn't franked for "air mail", yet it was in a plane crash!
