Let us help Kim select a proper avatar...a Contest
Ok, I am posting this former message board response below at the end, and starting a real contest.
I have not selected the prize yet, but I promise it will be worthwhile...have to go look in my collections for one with broad appeal, and since I am downsizing...there should be some good selections to offer as prize.. (your suggestions for the prize are also welcome but no US C3a please)
So let's put it in perspective: Kim has no avatars. Kim needs help. Kim purchases mostly penny auctions. Kim also collects some of the strangest things, he can tell you...but hey, who is to judge? (I also collect worthless pieces of used paper you cannot even use to write on, and pay more than Kim for them)
Kim will be the only judge in the avatar selection process, and he must promise to use the winning avatar. Entries will close May 15 ( I am out traveling for a month may 17, so we better close by then).
I will (hopefully ) have a prize (or selection of prizes) to offer to the winner....(the old trust me...) sooner than May 15.
Quote""I am suggesting a contest. Let us help Kim select an appropriate avatar. Post your suggestions. The Prize for the winning entry: a rare (bough for a penny) stamp just like Kim would love to find.
This is an example of Avatar...not my entry!

re: Let us help Kim select a proper avatar...a Contest
If we could have a K at one of the top corners, Kim's avatar is pretty straight forward? Isn't it?
No Kim, you are not banned from participating and you could win, but unless we ALL agree it is the one you self-selected that deserved to win...and you know the chances of this happening, here.
Meanwhile, here is a (non-photo shopped) avatar suggestion. Get the postal office issued magic marker..add the K and voila.
Nice SON by the way!

A red K in the centre of the cancellation on the Queen's neck? That would be cool and unique.

re: Let us help Kim select a proper avatar...a Contest
This is too easy guys...you have shown much more talent before. I am upping the prize(s)..there will now be two valuable stamps as prizes for the winner, one US stamp, and one ...well I don't know yet....suggestions?
Slight modifications of my entry, will not win you a prize...am I right, Kim? What next, a bigger k in a circle (copyright warning), more letters in the corners? a khj cancel from outside Boston? (google www.khj.com).... naaaahh there is more imagination here, and you still have two weeks to surprise even Kim!
Now for the US stamp...from my soon to be given away US collection, and not worth as much as a penny black, unfortunately,...but what do you expect khj fans or should I say(aka king, or kimg? fans) It is a well centered, SON, (some would give it a 100? grade lol) used penny bleue that I identify (or mis-identify, and mis-grade) as US #145...but I am not an expert at US stamps, so it could be a blood relative of the same era. (photo posted below)
I am now searching to add a non US stamp prize to build up some additional momentum, especially since bribe money seems to be in vogue. We all know that bribe money will not get you very far with Kim...just pennies! right Kim?
OK so posted below, prize #1.

Minor variations of a submission will only gain points for the original submission. Although I do consider the changing of the color from red to orange to be a major change that warrants a new major Scott catalog number.
I actually had several avatars on the old SW. Elsewhere, I've either had no avatars or just the default board-supplied avatar. I will post a few of my old avatars later to give you an idea of what "tickles my fancy".

Warning..contest ends in less than 10 days.
Why am I offering extra prizes if no one jumps in? No artistic talent? No imagination?

re: Let us help Kim select a proper avatar...a Contest
rrr will be out for a month, and has suggested that the deadline for submitting a new avatar for me to use on StampoRama be extended for a month.
While there have been really good submissions, I think it best that we extend it another month so that he will be here for the final judging. That will give all some addition time if you want to submit an entry (multiple entries are allowed).
New deadline is the end of June 15th (midnight using board time).
Thanks again for participating. You can expect rrr's prize to be great!
re: Let us help Kim select a proper avatar...a Contest
Thank you all for your additional submissions. Good to bump into you again, Grant!
Coco/Michael#####, when you posted about the selvedge yesterday, I happened to be thinking about the same thing. I ran into an orange GB Vicky with a nice orange "K" in the selvage!
re: Let us help Kim select a proper avatar...a Contest
Kim, I'll do you a favor and take that pesky Vicky off your hands, so you can have a "Selvage previously stamped" (SPS) item. I know, my thoughtfulness abounds ... (where is that whistling emoticon?).

re: Let us help Kim select a proper avatar...a Contest
Sorry, I've been sick for most of this week. Fortunately, internet cannot transmit germs from my coughing. However, I can only read on my computer a limited amount of time before my eyesight gets blurry again or a headache returns. Also, I will be undergoing a procedure next Tuesday.
Contest is over at midnight tonight (end of June 15), but I need time to get over the headaches and blurred vision to re-examine all the submissions at one time. I will make the decision on Thursday (6/20), as I'm not suppose to make any important decision until 24 hours after the procedure.
re: Let us help Kim select a proper avatar...a Contest
Welcome back!
I lost my voice again after a speaking engagement yesterday. Found a replacement for today, but I still had to show up -- ended up talking more than my replacement. Lined up a replacement for tomorrow, but I really can't miss tomorrow. Oh well. I guess if I'm fortunate I'll stay sick and the doctor will have to postpone my procedure.
The good news is that my insurance has agreed to replace my hail damaged roof. I know, that's not related at all, but at this point I'll grab at anything.
re: Let us help Kim select a proper avatar...a Contest
OK, first, thanks to Ralph for the contest idea, sponsoring the prizes, and allowing me to pick the winning avatar (lest I be saddled with a cockroach drinking Dr. Pepper avatar).
Thanks to all for your entries. They were all very good, and it was a difficult choice that I had to go through the pics several times for the final decision.
Here are the winners:
Best "stamp I'll never get" avatar (AGKING)
Best "warped mind", regardless of avatar submission (youpiao)
also best "steal someone else's submission/idea and modify it" avatar (youpiao)
Dianne award for best "kitty porn" avatar (tooler) -- I can't believe I still remember that!
Best "didn't meet any of k's criteria avatar (tooler) -- no penny, no orange, no k; just a stubborn old mule...oh wait... (you smart alec you!)
Best "shows k's true character" avatar (tooler)
Best "why isn't there Dr. Pepper in my glass" avatar (TheBlueDude) -- not one for jewelry, but love the k collar
Best "why is there still no Dr. Pepper in my glass" avatar (StampCommune) -- nice touch with the selvedge and 1 penny!
Best "toss the stamp, keep the selvedge" avatar (cocollectibles)
Best "initial submission" avatar (rrraphy) -- hey, somebody had to start +2/3 of my initials!
Best "meet k's criteria and pilfer submissions/ideas" avatar (Poodle_Mum,youpiao) -- I did notice the JH switch to HJ, nice touch!
And finally... the winner of the "Let's help Kim select a proper avatar contest"
bobby1948!!!
-- not only did it meet my basic criteria: penny, orange, and "k", but the SOR was a real nice touch! I will probably convert the K to k before uploading it.
Thanks again to all for participating/reading!
Now I just have to figure out how to upload an avatar...

Thanks Kim! As to uploading your avatar, go to the Members are and select "Edit" your information/profile, go to the box for "Picture" (this is your avatar) and upload the image. All past and future posts will now feature your selected avatar.

re: Let us help Kim select a proper avatar...a Contest
Thanks for the instructions bobby1948. Actually, I did that last night after I finished the post. It still didn't show up as avatar.
OK, now I see. I forgot to toggle the No/Yes for allowing the picture on the discussion board. Just as well. I'll wait until next week, so that it won't spoil the reading for anybody else who hasn't finished reading the thread.
One favor to ask. When it gets shrunk down to avatar size, the "SOR", "ONE", and "PENNY" become unreadable/blurred. Is there any way you can make the white lettering in the circle more white? Thanks!
Also, what program are you using to make these changes?
re: Let us help Kim select a proper avatar...a Contest
OK, I was able to whiten the letters and increase contrast. However, still same problem -- once it gets shrunk down to avatar size, the lettering become unreadable.
re: Let us help Kim select a proper avatar...a Contest
Thanks for trying, Doug! I really appreciate it.
I guess I will have to perform the taboo -- I'll trim off the bottom part of the selvedge. Maybe that will minimize the amount of reduction the forum software performs.
Alternatively, I could trim off the top 1/4 of the stamp, and thereby keeping the all-important selvedge intact.

re: Let us help Kim select a proper avatar...a Contest
What a great looking avatar kim, although technically you did not pick one winning entry, you improved on a submitted suggestion. So, should I cut the stamp in two pieces and mail you half of the prize?
Which brings me to the following 2 points.
1... Ya'all The contest is over, stop submitting new suggestions.
2... Bobby1984, please IM me or email me your postal address so that I may send your well deserved prize.

re: Let us help Kim select a proper avatar...a Contest
Since I was judging, I disqualified myself. Besides, my modifications were after the entry deadline. So Bobby gets it all. You can still tear it in half before mailing it to him.
Hmmm, not sure why but the lettering in Doug's seems much sharper than mine. Let me see what happens if I upload it and use it.
rrr, I'd probably revise your email to rrraphy at aol dot com, before the harvesters grab it.
re: Let us help Kim select a proper avatar...a Contest
OK, I like Doug's modification (does Dr. Pepper have any lawyers?). However, when I tried it as an avatar, the reduction in size made the lettering way too small to read. Oh, well, back to the right side k selvedge.
