March 13, 2013. (Romereports.com) The Vatican issued four stamps to commemorate this transitional period between the end of Benedict XVI's pontificate and the next Pope. The value of the stamp is 70 cents in Italy, 85 for Europe, 2 euros for the Americas, and 2.50 euros for Australia. However their use is limited to the Sede Vacante period. When the new Pope is chosen, they will become collection pieces.
That would mean they were only valid for what, two days? So, since they are only valid for postage during the transitional period, anyone gets hold of an actual posted letter, has a real keeper.
That took a Herculean effort to have those stamps printed and on the market that fast, didn't it? It must have taken a miracle to accomplish. Any smart person would have bought a bunch of them and mailed them to themselves and would have a potential fortune, like you mentioned Terry. I imagine they will now take all of the unsold and turn them into FDCs rather than throw them away.
