Don't let my wife see the state of our dining room table -- uh oh -- too late. This is what happens when you try to sort out stuff from 50 years back. The album in middle of the table is from 1930, with lots of nice old stamps. The big one in front is a Harris Statesman, and is where I'm putting identifiable stamps for the time being. I've also got some Vario pages where I'm parking other stamps. My U.S. Commemoratives (to 1960) are in the red and black album at the back of the table. And I've been sorting through packets. Maybe someday it will all come together.

My desk makes yours looks "neat as a pin." Maybe that is why I have been divorced twice and have run off so many other possibilities.
Keep on truckin', my friend. This hobby isn't about neatness, it is about enjoyment. Whatever way works best for you, and doesn't result in domestic disaster, is the right way.

I figured the candles were for incinerating his damaged stamps, or the ones he got tired of trying to identify. He really needs to have a glass bowl there for throw the "hot" ones in though.

I bet many identify with that "dining" table (really, a nice large stamp sorting table, but shhhh, don't tell the boss).
We can play a "what's wrong with this picture?" game. Someone already pointed out candlesticks (wax on stamps! Nooooo!!). I'll point out the coaster by the computer, potential for a sticky drink splashing on the keyboard. And where are the tongs?
I thought the candles were for seeing watermarks.....how else can one see them without a bright light?
And some of those stamps are trying to run under the runner. Watch out.

I can't use the dining room table as half is covered with a war game (Napoleonics) and the other with hundreds of Pokemon cards. I have to use the kitchen table. Just too many hobbies in my home.
Ha, yeah. If I could fit under the table like I used to about a thousand years ago that would be perfect. But I'd be competing with the dog, the dog hair and the debris my kids left there from the previous meal. But there would be plenty to eat.

Before my boys, I used to find the best solution was using the floor. Hard on the tuchas and my back but I never ran out of sorting space. Then Poodle #1 appeared. That put the kibosh on that plan of action.
That also put my stamp collecting on hold for several years and I was on a roll for about 5 years before that - did a ton of sorting and hinging stamps into 6 3" WW binders.
Poodle #2 was very sick so I didn't have a chance to do stamps at all.
Now Poodle #3 - I have the opportunity to use a small table that slides under the couch. When I want to do mounting, I use the couch - still not good on my back and send the Poodle to his comfortable mattress in the living room. Then I get the dirty stare the whole time I'm doing my stamps. Eventually after four or five hours, the Poodle begins to stick his head where it is not wanted in an attempt to tell me I've taken enough time away from his couch space. That's actually good because I probably need a break from killing my back but at the same time, by that time I'm on a roll and with the exception of a Poodle's "I have to go to the bathroom", I don't want to be interrupted. Alas, the Poodle always wins that argument
