CTV News website has the following on their website:

"
Sweeping cuts may be ahead for Canada Post as the Crown corporation faces a $327 million operating loss, CTV News has learned.

In order to stay afloat, Canada Post is considering:

reducing home delivery from five to four, or even three, days
closing some of the 6,500 retail outlets across the country
consolidating its 21 sorting centres to just major cities.

Canada Post has been struggling with weakening demand for traditional mail services, as people turn to email to communicate, pay bills and other tasks one facilitated by the post office.

Canada Post spokesperson Jon Hamilton said all options are on the table as the company figures out a way to remain viable in the future.

Well the good news for those of us south of the border is In do not think that can be blamed on the obstinacy of the US Congress, or,I trust, Barack Obama.

I think you are safe from blame for this one Charlie, although I am sure a case could be made that due to congressional (in)action on effectively dealing with the fiscal cliff, a negative impact on wall street has occurred, thus leaving thousands upon thousands of Capital One and Amex credit card applications to flow north through the Canadian Postal system.

Nah, just joking this is all on us.

And today and yesterday wall Street's DJ average confounds all the prognosticators.

One view is that there is so much spare money piled up and bank interest so low that money is going into stocks because the mattresses are getting too lumpy.

In the states at least, there is financial happiness at the top but gnashing of teeth elsewhere. Dow represents big money and has little representation of, or effect on, the general economy or people who inhabit it.

It is somewhat like inflation, which is at historic lows, but discounts certain pesky things, like health costs, which, in the private sector, continue to rise at around 15 per cent annually.

It is interesting how the US government leaves certain things like health care and energy costs out of the cost of living index. Even with a wage increase somewhere between 3% and 6% per year workers have less money to save or spend on non-essentials. For those on a fixed income it is even more distressing.

I wonder what impact it will have on the economy not being able to move goods from providers to consumers 6 days a week?

I read an interesting article about a new startup company that will consolidate business and home delivery mail and notify the user by e-mail what has been delivered. There were few details on how it works but I would presume they would send scans of the envelopes and you could decide what you wanted delivered and when. For instance I only need my bills once every two weeks but I want my stamps from the Stamporama auction once a week. At least from my perspective there isn't much in the mail that I couldn't live without getting only once a week. Is once a week delivery far off?

Seems like I read that the Canada Post employees (mailmen, sorters, clerks, etc.) have a union and Canada Post management has a union, also. Hail! No wonder they're losing money.

Carl:

I know you prefer to deal with figments of your imagination rather than with facts.

Enjoy your stamps because the career prospects of letter-carriers appear dim.
