Recieved last week this cover I won at auction elsewhere - bid on it out of curiosity but turn out to be an excellent aquisition. Take a look at the image below. Any comments are welcome.

Saleem:
Yes, I agree with you, it is an excellent acquisition. Certified, special delivery airmail, originating from an US APO, is not run-of-the-mill stamp-collecting material. Permit me to be envious.

re: Airmail - Special Delivery - Certified Mail from APO!!
Yes. APO 472 was (is?) located in Berlin. I am collecting the Universal Model "K" hand-operated machine cancels and can share my two specimens with the US ARMY / POSTAL SERVICE dial (April 4, 1952), which also was used on Saleem's cover, and the later US ARMY AIR FORCE / POSTAL SERVICE (Jan 25, 1963).
The APO was redesignated APO 09742 when Zip codes were introduced January 1, 1965, and I assume an updated dial must exist then. It remains to be discovered in a dollar box. Here are the fronts:

re: Airmail - Special Delivery - Certified Mail from APO!!
David,
I was referring to the date when the system of APO numbers was abolished and zip-like codes were also introduced for military installations. I am fairly certain that date was Jauanary 1, 1965, i.e., a little later than the introduction of ZIP codes for domestic mail addresses.

ah, never thought of that, Arno. thanks for the clarification, and even better information for understanding APOs. Glad I tried to correct you or I probably would never know this. I love this place.
