JUst above the "Grenada" is some printing that I cannot make out.

Have you checked Revenue Stamps books ?

The black printing says, "ONE PENNY". The stamp is a revenue issue.

re: Grenada #16?

Hi Michael,
You are losing me on this one. Where is the one penny? Am I missing a step?

Regards ... TIm.

re: Grenada #16?

The "ONE PENNY" is surcharged right over the "GRENADA" on the bottom.

I should have said it is "above", not "over" the country name.

Thanks, Randy for clarifying below!

Tim,

the words "ONE PENNY" (in partially-faded black lettering) are located directly above the word Granada and directly below the circled image.
part of the handwritten manuscript cancel covers some of it up, making it a bit difficult for the eye to make out.

...good eye, Michael!

re: Grenada #16?

As Michael says this is a revenue issue, Barefoot #13 from 1879. I don't have a recent edition of the catalogue but in 1996 it was catalogued at fifty pence.

The crown and "ONE PENNY" are printed in green. This was the stamp overprinted "POSTAGE" to become Scott #16.

AHA! Now I can see the crown on the top! I thought it was a blotchy cancel.
