For those who haven't seen it, there is (dare I say) an "amusing" video over at the Virtual Stamp Club entitled, "Stamp Story 1955."

P.S. You just have to love the way everybody is dressed for the occasion.

re: A look into the past: post offices

Bob,
Just watched the video, and it brought back fond memories. Most every place shown, I was there, especially Nassau Street. Used to go there, usually on a Saturday, and bought many a stamp at Frank Warners. Although the store front shops brought in the most traffic, I think that it was 16 Nassau St that was an office building that housed many dealers including Stanley Gibbons. One dealer where I spent a lot of time with was Bob Dempsey, also Leo Scarlet. At the time, 1946 - 1955, I was not only dealing, but collecting British Colonies, and bought most of my stamps on Nassau St. Purchased the entire Silver Wedding stamps on cover, from just two dealers, piecemeal. The City Hall stamp club used to meet down there, and I used to go to some of the meetings. When I look back, those were really great days. One really does not know at the time of certain events in their life how great it was, until it is gone.
I thought that the stamp shops on Nassau St would be there forever, but gradually I saw them close up. Who ever expected to see the the Minkus Stamp Store in Gimbels to close. or for that matter, for Gimbels itself to disappear. Nothing ever stays the same, so enjoy what you have NOW!

I love how she handled the stamp with her fingers then hinged it into the album. Pure blasphemy these days.

It was a great look into the past. It reminds me of my cigarette-smoking Dad and his love of hinges.
