In a recent kiloware lot that I purchased I found a "golden" cardinal instead of the regular red variety. Does anyone know if this is just a colour change as a result of fading or is it a legitimate variety?

Sure looks like a red missing variety-if there is one. Keep both together, and don't remove the remnant on the color missing bird. You may have a wonderful EFO color missing variety. Congratulations.

I agree with Dan. To my eye it looks like the red is missing rather than the stamp being generally washed out. The other colors don't looked washed out at all.

Hi,
I hate to disagree with the other responders, but i see "washed-our red" on the stamp. Often a printing press is stopped to wash down the plates for any number of reasons. When the press is restarted, often the solvent used to clean the plates has not compltey dried and the first few sheets have washed out colors. I believe this is what happened to the Cardinal stamp.

If Terry is right, and I have no basis to believe that he is not, rather than a 'color omitted' EFO, you would have an underinked EFO. Still a very nice find.

i'm with Terry on this one. There's obviously something similar to red here, so unless they were doing 5 colors in which one of them was a specific red added to the underlying burnt orange/washed red that we see on the right stamp, this looks either like underinking or washed out. Look also at the black lettering at the bottom and see that it's far less distinct than the copy on the left. Still interesting, no matter what, but I don't think that this will be considered a color-ommitted error.
