I am working on a presentation for my stamp club, the BC Philatelic Society. Could someone with a recent edition of The Unitrade Specialized Catalogue of Canadian Stamps check the values for First Day Covers of Canada CE3 and CE4?

Actually, I could use values for MNH and used singles as well. My old catalogue shows a never-hinged premium of 50%. I would appreciate having values that take the current premium into account

Thanks,

Bob

re: FDC value for Canada CE3 & CE4

Hi Bob;

According to the 2009 Unitrade catalogue here are the values for CE3 and CE4

CE3 NH% 50% *VF 7.50 *F 4.00 Add 50% to Mint Value if Never Hinged

Used VF 6.00 Fine 4.00
FDC $18.00

CE4 NH% 50% *VF 7.50 *F 4.00 Add 50% to Mint Value if Never Hinged

Used VF 6.00 Fine 4.00
FDC $175.00

You will find that in the Unitrade catalogue there is a NH% factor shown for most if not all stamps issued in 1948 and earlier years.

re: FDC value for Canada CE3 & CE4

Thanks Liz and Glorian,

My older Unitrade indicates that only 300,000 CE3s were issued, or one third the number of CE4s. Isn't it curious that the stamp values are identical?

It would be interesting to know more about the first day covers. It's hard to believe that there was an official FDC for CE4, given the highly political nature of the French accent error on CE3 which made it necessary. If there were an official FDC, it must not have been well advertised, hence the extreme difference in value from the FDC for CE3. Anyone know anything about this?

Pretty unlikely. I've been collecting this type of material for 15 years or so, and I've never seen either FDC. 300,000 is a very small amount of covers -- if one is listed on Stamporama, you'll find yourself in a bidding war with me! :-)

FDC's of CE3 are not uncommon. One comes across them as part of complete sets of the 1946 Peace issue, either as singles or in combo with other values. Here are a couple of examples

CE3-fdc
Peace-fdc1
Peace-fdc2

Hmmm... A CE-4 FDC. As the German soldier from "Laugh In" would say, "Verrry eenteresting..." I assume, since this is an unofficial, unaddressed, very bland cover that you'll be offering it in the Stamporama Auction for a penny? What was that about the spelling of "ass-u-me"? :-)

Thanks for enlightening me, Roy. Would you mind if I used that image in future web pages or PowerPoint presentations?

Feel free to use the picture as you like.

As to the blandness of the cover, I believe, (but can't support the opinion) that the reissue was unannounced, and thus only those close to the Post Office and Philatelic Agency were aware of it and had the opportunity to create first day covers. This would account for the high catalogue value. I have never seen a cacheted example of a CE4 FDC.

I have (most of) a set of Arch and Maple Leaf issue FDCs of the 1930s and the same thing happened then. The issues were not announced in advance, and about the only FDCs in existence were created by an employee of the of the Post Office, a Mr. T.R. Legault, and are addressed to him, or his friend, Mr. Brophy.
