re: Penny Black
The Penny Black is not a rare stamp. There were 68,808,000 printed. Many survived because they were used on letter sheets and not on envelopes. People would keep the whole letter. On the other hand US 1 only had 3,712,000 printed. I believe that if the Penny Black was not the 1st stamp ever printed it would sell for much less due to the availability.
A Stanley-Gibbons blogger reported recently that the proliferation of Chinese billionaires and multi-billionaires is powering a surge in stamp collecting in China, especially for classic stamps. Of particular interest, according to the blogger, is the Penny Black, which is selling in China for many times catalogue value. Stanley-Gibbons has a standing order from China for up to 10,000 used Penny Blacks. If you want a Penny Black, now is the time to buy one! I can rest easy, because I have one!
Yes, the Penny Black is not a rare stamp and is inexpensive with 1-2 and 3... margins, but with 4 margins is quite expensive, it depends of the plate. Remember that the Penny Black was printed in plates 1a, 1b, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and the now rare plate 11 all with different number of issues. The plate 11 is very expensive. Some time ago I saw that in eBay one plate 11 with 3.8 margins was sold in USD$2,780.00!. Plate 10 with 4 margins is not very common too, some of them come with "O" flaw, marks not registered in catalogues, etc.
Curiously the Plate 11 was not from the first stamps in the World because it was Registered in January 27, 1841, but it belongs to the group of the "Black Pennies".
During the same 1840 1 Penny Black was converted for Oficial Use with the letters "V-R" and it is a very expensive stamp.
Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I have a Penny Black I would like to add to the penny page with the letters KF. Can someone tell me how to do this? Thanks
Thank you Tooler, I have added your KF to our Penny Black page.
New members who have possibly not discovered our Penny Black page, we are trying to fill a whole sheet of Penny Blacks. Please let me know if you have one that we don't have in our combined collection.
Hi AK,
I'll add your Penny to the page. I fully understand your excitement at getting a Penny Black with your initials. I have a PB with my initials also, a nice "TA" and I love it.

I have a mint unhinged 1949 yellow ½d wallaroo (kangaroo) stamp; they're meant to be deep orange. It definitely isn't Australia's first stamp, only 160 were ever recorded, it is considered very scarce and is worth more than a clean used Penny Black with 4 decent borders.

Great info on Penny Blacks!
Just purchased a Penny Black -- E F. When it arrives I will scan and present. This is a day of firsts for me, first Penny Black, and first purchase ever on Ebay. I am feeling somewhat giddy, which is a hard feeling to attain when you are 65.
Peter,
Perish the thought of a hinge. Hingeless DAVO album here, and stamp tongs. I can never go back (being somewhat lazy by nature as well). Love this album. I did not get the leather binder because that just seemed a bit too Downton Abby, but the standard binder and slip look they will be fine.
And speaking of hinges, I am breaking down my old US album and taking stamps out of the split-back hinges, and finding a few stamps sticking. Overzealous on applying moisture I guess.
My wife is quite tired of me showing her the PB. And the cat feigns disinterest.
Wine,
You need to teach your wife to say, yes dear, isn't that wonderful, just at the right times. My lovely wife of 39 years has that down to an art form. She is truly a wonderful woman.
Alas Tim, my wife is from New York City (Long Island technically). I can't teach her anything. But she does keep me on my toes. And since she spends a fortune on fabric and sewing machine arcana, she does not begrudge me my stamp purchases.
