I'm a biologist so its almost a job requirement. Very interesting man with some real insights who sat on his ideas for years for concern for their implications and the first person to apply population models to the natural world. Worked out most of the tenets of evolution without any knowledge of genetics. Also featured in plasticine form in the rather fun and silly "Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!"
BTW I haven't come across his work on elevation but it sounds interesting
Of course any mention of Darwin and his famous theory should also mention Alfred Russel Wallace, a true collector who certainly forced Darwin's hand when it came to publishing.
Sir James Brooke, the first rajah of Sarawak, was Wallace's patron and host. The contrast between Borneo and New Guinea, and the islands around them, were to Wallace what the Galapagos were for Darwin.
James Brooke is depicted on the first issue of Sarawak.
