I am the owner of a brand new APS member number. It's been roughly 2.5 months since I joined January 1st 2021. Received my magazine with my name and ID. I couldn't be more proud. Thank you.

Thank you Phil. I believe I was about a year old when you received your number. It's an honor to be in the company of such a dedicated and welcoming collector such as yourself. Thank you !!
I received an "invitation" to join in the mail last month.... I wondered how they even knew about me? Is it common for other members to suggest a new prospect, or do they data mine some affiliated sites for potential members? The envelope came addressed to me at my normal home address. Not that I have a problem with the offer, I was just curious how they discovered me as a potential member? SOR and eBay are basically the only sites I visit that are stamp-related and would have my contact information.

Possiblity you may have bought a stamp from a member ? That's how it happened in my case as far as receiving the invite. I thought it was a really nice gesture actually so I joined. Haven't looked back since. But I did get a letter from a gentleman inviting me to preview some stamps on approval. Kind of caught me off guard but I'm guessing he got my information from the magazine that they put your name in the month after signing up. Just a guess. Im actually glad he did. Will be a customer for life. Ive been collecting for about 9 months or so but I've realized I'd much rather see them up close and personal then try and judge them from a photo. As soon as things get back to normal I plan on visiting shows and collecting that way. Just my preference I guess. Although I do buy a few here and there to squelch the addiction. No not really, I actually enjoy it immensely.
@Perf11: I'm not surprised that APS let you join. They let me join! Seriously, APS is or at least was bleeding membership. Perhaps the pandemic has given the organization a boost. I can't comment on why you received an invitation, but I think you made a good choice.
I let my membership lapse last year because I just didn't feel that I was getting my money's worth. I would rarely find articles in the journal that interested me; I'd rather give my money to StampoRama! At the same time, the APS has at times been very useful. When I was more actively publishing web pages on my Ephemeral Treasures web site, the American Philatelic Research Library was a goldmine, charging a pittance for researching virtually any philatelic question and usually coming up with worthwhile information.
I also used the society's translation service on a few occasions, again at little cost. I think I'll probably join again since I seem to be getting back into web page publishing; I'm currently working on a web page about the crash of Linee Aeree Italiane Flight 451 at Idlewild in 1954. I have previously published web pages about two other 1954 crashes — the Trans-Canada Airlines collision with a Royal Canadian Air Force trainer over Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and the Christmas Eve crash of a BOAC Stratocruiser at Prestwick, Scotland. Interesting historical note: In 1954 alone, 60 airliners — 60! — fell from the sky.
Greetings from member 222027. Once things clear up, a visit to Bellefonte should be in order - the folks there are great and the resources are unbelievable.
Geoff
