General Philatelic/Newcomer Cnr : Converting Catalog Numbers

Greetings. Whilst organizing my stamps I sometimes find that when I identify a stamp online it only has 1 catalog number mentioned. Say Michels for example, or Stanley Gibbons. So I was wondering how I find out what the same stamp would be under different catalog systems? If I wanted to know what Scott number it would be, or what number Yvert et Tellier assigned the same stamp for example?

Now I'm totally prepared to be told I'm asking the impossible or that some form of magic needs to be involved in some way. But I am hoping that there is in fact some possible way of going about figuring out the different numbers between catalogs for the same stamp. Thank you in advance for any responses, good, bad or in between! Big Grin

A source you can use is Colnect, there is a search feature that allows you to search by catalogue number.

re: Converting Catalog Numbers

For newcomers, I will just note that Colnect is not perfect and there are challenges with any cross reference when it comes to more minor varieties as each catalog to different levels of specialization.

For example, I was using Colnect to correlate Great Britain Machins. Scott ignores tagging but does include EME (revised image) and some thick / thin values. SG Concise covers tagging but ignores thick or thin types and EME. There is often other reasons there is a correlation but not always.

re: Converting Catalog Numbers

Thank you Alyn and Angore. I have been using ColNect for a while now, but as Angore mentioned there are sometimes issues with its mostly great resource abilities.

Sometimes the stamps on ColNect only have one catalog reference (say Michel) and then if you happen to be organizing your collection by a different catalog (Scott) it can be hard to figure out what the corresponding number is.

Thank you both for your responses though, much appreciated.
