I've found a 1947 5 F Marianne stamp with what appears to be just a one-line postmark (see picture below). It is from a town on the Belgian border, but that's all I can find. Since it is on an off-paper stamp, there is nothing to indicate what kind of service it was used to pay for. Has anyone seen similar postmarks from France and can comment on their use?

re: France: One-line postmarks?

Hello Martin,

I had a quick look at my French stamps of the period and the only similar one I have is a red 50c "peace" military frank from 1933.

This is also a loose stamp and has two partial postmarks: (1) a wavy line and CDS machine postmark and (2) a straight-line CHEMERY postmark.

I guess the CHEMERY postmark is from Chémery but it could be from various other places whose names start like this.

re: France: One-line postmarks?

I'm not a "serious" France collector, but I've seen these straight-line hand cancels on 1915-1950's French stamps.

This is pure guesswork, but in Denmark (I'm a lifetime collector) there were similar cancels, and they were carried by local mailmen to cancel any "skips" they noticed while delivering the mail. Maybe they had something similar in France?

Cheers,
Peter
