The past 5 months have been a bleak time for my collecting, not having the option to take a field trip to APS Hq in Bellefonte, not having the APS show in Hartford that we look forward to as a mini vacation every 6 years, the smaller stamp shows that Mr. FourGGGGs and i travelled to in North Jersey, the monthly auctions at our club. The internet..Stamporama and eBay will have to be my stamp market this year. I do miss the hands on face to face transactions.
If you look at the photo you will see the building on the left in the image that has a white overhead door - thats the place we are meeting for now.
However, the new coffee shop in the front of the red building on the right is due to open this week on Wednesday, and the owners are anxious to have our club move our meetings inside the new shop! We are all anxious to do so as well!
Our circuit sales books from the APS are due to start back up this month as well, which we are all thankful for.
We only had one member forego the meetings, so we are fortunate for that also.
I hope all of you have found ways and means to continue your collecting/studies of stamps/covers/postal history - and whatever other hobbies - since this all began affecting all our daily lives.
re: I have been falling behind in my collecting due to Covid-19
Musicman, Nice, we are not back at the V.F.W. yet..with a sometimes open sometimes closed door to the tap room for those so inclined...i think it did improve bidding on certain items. I handled the APS circuit books for the club for what seemed forever...they just did not seem to catch on with the members who were spoiled with our auction prices and thought what the circuit books needed to charge usually 50 percent plus were too pricey. Finally i just stopped getting them and saved the club a hundred bucks a year in shipping.

Yippee!
My local auction house is having a stamp & coin auction next week.
Bidding is "Live on line".
It will be interesting to see what items go for.
The most interesting item for sale is a Presentation Book presented to the Countess of Aberdeen containing the full set of 1897 Jubilee issues from Canada. Unfortunately they are stuck on a page and not Unmounted Mint. Estimate is £100-£200 with a Buyers premium of 28.5%

re: I have been falling behind in my collecting due to Covid-19
I haven’t done much of anything since Covid hit since it affected my income, so I wasn’t in a bidding/ buying mood! Nor have I been able to do any of my post office runs for postmarks

Tom,
I suspect you are not alone in suffering from the
economic effects.
I wish you luck and hope you stay healthy.

re: I have been falling behind in my collecting due to Covid-19
"Ouch! Obviously a very popular item to drive the bids up to that level."
I am guessing there are no more stamp dealers left who have this item readily in stock, or there were two obviously rich guys to whom £1700 is maybe less than £1.70 to me and they did not want to spend the time looking for a cheaper source.
It is also possible they wanted to make a charitable donation and price did not matter.
re: I have been falling behind in my collecting due to Covid-19
It was a unique item. We shall never see another as I doubt the Countess of Aberdeen got two!!!
It only takes two bidders to drive up the price, no more no less.

re: I have been falling behind in my collecting due to Covid-19
I've been in the antique business for a large percentage of my life and have attended many auctions. It really only does take two people - I've seen junk go for huge prices because two people want it. I've done it myself - I was at an auction about a year ago and there was a bottle there with a rare label. I wanted it real bad, unfortunately someone else did as well. I got it, but probably at a ridiculous price. But I really like that bottle and look at it all the time. Was I foolish? Yes! Do I care? No! We live with what we do, and we'd probably do it again!!
