Sometimes you acquire some bizarre, crazy things, and here is one from my postal history collection, with contents, front and back, postmarked June 10, 1911 from Newark, New Jersey, USA. I think it was a stamp dealer talking to another stamp dealer about acquiring sets of stamps and their prices. What do you think?

re: Crazy Newark Cover from 1911

I am intrigued by the message. Unfortunately, the key to the message is in the two words that I can't make out:

I interpret the rest of the message as follows:

Can't get any ???? ???? on Fiji at less than 15/- ($3.75) Picketts(?) price
Roessler has no more - Champion $5.00
per set - F.P. Bros(?) Boston (rec'd today but ret'd hastilly - $6.00)
regular $10.00 - Hold me ??? (up?)
I will come down Sunday.

Having a look at the catalog for Fiji, I suspect the message relates to the latest set of KEVII definitives with the new watermark that were issued from 1904 to the 5/- in 1911 (the £1 would not have been issued yet, it appeared in 1912 according to Scott). This makes some sense as the total face value was about 8 shillings, so the best price was just under double face value.

Reminds me of the heydey of the late 1970s-early 1980s when we were bidding for the lastest "hot" sets with buy ads in Linns and Canadian Stamp News. The two sets of Canada $1 and $2 Olympics stamps hit a high bid of 6x face value -- we now use them for postage regularly!

A guess. It might say "New Heb on Fiji".

New Hebrides used Fiji stamps that were overprinted with "New Hebrides" at about this time,

AGKING - Thank you for the kind words.

Roy - I think it is: "Can't get any new net on Fiji" and I interpret that as "Cannot get any new net price deals or net price bulk lots on the new Fiji sets."

The other one I thought says: F.P. Bron Boston (received today but hastily returned - $6.00) regular price $10.00 Hold me up! -This means the guy's prices are so high he is trying to rob me. The dealer cannot make any money buying wholesale at that price.

This odd cover and contents does show the wheelin' and dealin' going on back in 1911 among the stamp dealers of the day, as they tried to get the new issues first for their clients. They probably tried to send the most outrageous cover they could dream up just for a laugh with each other. The cover is 4.5 inches wide and 2.5 inches tall.

Roy, I thought you might enjoy this one, and thanks for adding to this thread.

When I read it through the first time I thought it was New Hebrides, too.

I think you both are probably correct, New Hebrides on Fiji sounds more likely, thanks for adding to this discussion.

"New Heb on Fiji" makes perfect sense. The overprinted KEVII set issued complete on Dec. 15, 1910. With a total face value of 2sh5d the 15/- price was about 6x face value ... gee, that sounds familiar!

Good morning! Ah yes, stamp dealers...it takes one to know one, Roy. Happy

Glad to see you back on the board, IkeyP, and thanks for the kind words. I was wondering about you, as I had not seen you around lately.

This was written on the back of a trimmed, unused, postal card, is it from Mexico?

I think it is this one from Nicaragua.

The Hamilton Banknote Co. had deals to print the stamps for a lot of Central American countries for free, in exchange for the right to reprint the stamps or stationery once they were demonitized. That's why there is so much mint Central America available from the c1890s. The dealers were using them for scratchpads.

However, they are beautifully done, and now very popular (at the right price).
