Hi, does anyone know what this whale grinding powder would be used for in WW2 Germany? Was it a source of sulpha for wounds? For cooking? For gunpowder? Any information much appreciated. Thank you!Image Not Found

Agreed.

The word is Waschseifenpulver basically formed from Wasch (wash) Seife (soap) Pulver (powder).

The font uses a form of the letter "s" that's rather like the old English "long s".

Just like Charlie2009 and NigelC are saying :

It is a kind of distribution coupons to buy "Wasch Seifen Pulver" and this coupon was valid till September 30th 1944.

In order to ensure that everyone can obtain raw materials and food during these times of lack, a government can issue distribution coupons. When a product such as coffee is rationed to a pack per person, a store may only sell one pack per person. But this person can go to several shops, or send his entire family to buy a pack of coffee each. To make the rationing effective, a control means is therefore required: the distribution ticket.

Some examples from the Netherlands during World War 2 :

Boter -> Butter
Aardappelen -> Potatoes
Visch -> Fish (I like the old Dutch grammar)
And the blue ones on the right side : Brood -> Bread

Thank you so much. Glad to know the whales were safe from rationing. I'm sorry--when I plugged walchleifenpulver into Google translate it came up with whale grinding powder. Washing powder makes so much more sense. I'll be more cognizant now of font issues!! : )
