I know the previous thread was closed by request of the original poster, and I don't have any problem if the club wants to close the topic permanently. But I found the discussion extremely interesting, and I restrained myself from injecting my 2 "pennies" until now.
We all bring our own biases, personal, regional, educational, religious etc.. in any discussion. and the moderators are not excluded.
It would be interesting for each one to try to put oneself in the shoes of the "other side". In that context I saw an interesting post which I will share. Please, if you want to comment about it, keep it on the narrow context of how does the "other side' feels about it.

I hope they do take all the statues down. But what are people going to do when they can no longer blame Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson for all their problems?

re: 2. they see what they want to see ! (continued, or not?)
It says much more succinctly what I attempted to say in my original contribution. I did say I agreed statues offensive to people of colour should be removed, but not by baying mobs of people, and only after discussion and agreement in the community.
Britain, (and I include Scotland here) was a major contributor in, and beneficiary of, the trade in human beings now called the slave trade. All parts of Britain have relics reminding us of those days. While I cannot yet conceive of my country being denuded of statues, mature dialogue should begin about the future of offensive monoliths.
Ian, should Fort William, or Fort George be renamed? How about changing them to Manor Alex and Castle Sturgeon?
re: 2. they see what they want to see ! (continued, or not?)
Change your history at your own peril. Learn from your history. Do not destroy it.
Should I seek reparation, from The Italians for what the Romans done, or what the Irish, or the Danes, or the Norwegians, or the Swedes, or the Normans, or the French, or the English, or the Dutch, or the Germans, or the Chinese, or the Japanese for what they done to my ancestors?
Just look at the mess of the Middle East because of the worlds guilty conscience and mans determination to have power over others.
"Ian, should Fort William, or Fort George be renamed? How about changing them to Manor Alex and Castle Sturgeon?"
Don't be so bloomin' daft!!
Now if you want to arrest Salmond and Sturgeon and try them for Treason, Be my guest!!
One final question. If our countries are so bad, so disgraceful so rascist Why Why Oh Why are people risking death and modern day slavery and are so so desperate to come here???????

"so desperate to come here???????"
Because the social security system is set up to pay them money and house them. The UK is by far and away a better place to live than many terrorist controlled countries around the world.
If you are prepared to work hard then you can achieve. I find in Canada that it is not what you know but who that multiplies your chance of getting a job.

Wee Alex walked away from court a free man. He will make a fortune from civil suits and book deals. To cut costs, I heard a rumour Linlithgow is to be renamed "Salmond Palace".
Ian, you mentioned how people are desperate to come here. Scotland makes a drink famed for making us forget worries and problems. Scots enjoyed life in the country of their birth so much, they are now found in every country on the planet. Many saw their choice as emigrate or look at life through the bottom of a whisky glass. Is life here so good, or is it so bad elsewhere?
America even voted in a Scot (well half Scot) as their current President. If they want to send him back we will tell them that train has now left the station.
I am off to bed now before my wife finishes that bottle of Glenmorangie. Night night Ian.

"Because the social security system is set up to pay them money and house them."
Not quite accurate.
Asylum Seekers are given housing or are put into hotels. They are given 3 meals a day in these hotels and the £5.25 a day they are given is kept by those that provide the meals. Therefore they have no "extra" money to spend. They are more or less kept as prisoners until they are either granted Asylum or deported. This can take up to several months if not a year or two.
Some of the meals they are provided with I wouldn't feed to my dog.
Try living on no money for months. No money for a haircut, soap, deoderant, milk, coffee tea, or any type of snack. How do you fill in your day?

Gudgie; Now for the History Lesson. You really didn't go to the right school.
"Scots enjoyed life in the country of their birth so much, they are now found in every country on the planet. "
You have obviously forgotten the reasons why so many Scots emigrated throughout the world.
a) The Highland Clearances!
b) The Scots desire to explore the world.
c) Serving the British Empire as a Civil Servant and staying in the Country they went to.
d) Recruited by the Oldest Retail Company in the World..The Company of Adventurers and Englishmen Trading into Hudson's Bay.
e) Recruited by The East India Company and staying in the Country they went to.
f) Serving in the Royal Navy and staying in the Country they went to.
g) Serving in the British Army and staying in the Country they went to.
h) Encouraged to go to North America with the promise of land.
i) Transported to Australia as a criminal
j) Transported to the West Indies as a criminal
k) Transported to parts of Africa as a criminal
l) Shipped to Australia as an orphan.
m) Encouraged by the Australian Government on the £10 fare Scheme
n) Encouraged to go to Canada with the promise of jobs.
"

He only walked away because the prosecutor was pathetic, he never raised the correct charges against him. He was as guilty as hell. He had better be careful as perjury is still an open-ended possibility.
He was a very poor politician full of his own importance, and Nicola, his protege is worse. All she does is blame Westminster for Scotland's ills. She has had the powers, she has returned some of them to Westminster and we are the highest taxed part of the United Kingdom and it will get worse 'cos of covid and she will blame Westminster. How pathetic!
Any idiot could have won the Independence Referendum but the top brass of the SNP were too controlling and like ALL National Socialist Parties they knew best and unless they personally came up with the policy thrusts, everyone else's ideas were dismissed.
" Scotland makes a drink famed for making us forget worries and problems."
That's a terrible thing to say about Irn-Bru!!

I was fortunate to be educated in one of Scotland's finest schools. It was so good it was approved by the Secretary of State.
re: 2. they see what they want to see ! (continued, or not?)
Can't get rid of these! Hundreds of millions out there.
Isn't it illegal to own Nazi memorabilia in Germany? Seems like I read that anything with the swastika is illegal. Is it beyond the realm of possibility to think that owning and displaying these stamps could one day be a crime?
Its ABSOLUTELY possible. After recently hearing that Mt. Rushmore, the Washington Monunent and every painting of white Jesus should come down I will believe anything.

"That is a very weird song!"
Yeah!
Old folk songs are not always about war, tragedies, love etc etc etc.
You can imagine a group of country folk sitting around a fire of an evening after a hard days work, drinking cider and singing their bawdy songs. What a life.
Of course transpose the ph and pl of pheasant plucker and it gives added meaning.

"Of course transpose the ph and pl of pheasant plucker and it gives added meaning."
Ian, I was going to start a new (x rated?) post quoting you to start with, but then I looked at the title of this post..and my god, it fits...
This is a well known game that is played with every days writings, politics and news headlines, and in France the satirical newspaper "Le Canard Enchaîné" has had a delightful column for years and years. (now available in book form : Sur l'Album de la Comtesse : 30 ans de contrepèteries politiques parues dans le Canard enchaîné )
The expression "Contrepeterie" does not have an English equivalent, I think. It refers to the transposition of letters or syllables in a sentence that produces a comical and often obscene meaning.
A famous one often given as an example, from a classical medieval author, was "femme folle a la messe".(1 see below for the clue)
Some of the transpositions are really hard to discover, making it a real challenge in deciphering the daily newspaper offerings. Better than cross word puzzles!
Shall we play?
I have never seen it played in the English language press, but in Scotland I am sure Ian can refer us to many good sources. (or Ireland where the limerick is king)
rrr...
(1)"femme folle a la messe" becomes "femme molle a la fesse".

rrraphy:- Unfortunately I must decline your kind and generous offer of playing at the moment as I do feel that the language produced may upset the more delicate ears of some members.
I would hate to fall foul of philb for a second time. His knowledge of ancient Greek execution methods may come to the fore once more. (Hopefully he hasn't had a Mongol ancestor as they had some very imaginative ways of execution).

I may be a wise (and safe) choice Ian...so I am surprised!
Is Spoonerism the correct English translation? I always thought of spoonerism as accidental, while " contrepèteries" are deliberate.

Sounds like you guys are having fun...Ian i believe my DNA came back mainly Italian/Greek but it changes from time to time ..i think there was a German interloper during WW1 with my Grandmother in the Dolomites.

".Metathesis. Thank you fans , don't applaud"
Wrong Ian, wrong. I just checked the definition. A "contrepèterie" is not about mostly adjacent letters, but about substituting letters or group of letters across a whole sentence. It really is an art. How is your French? I can share (privately) some beauties....
Metathesis Dictionary Definition: the transposition of sounds or letters in a word.
or: Metathesis is the transposition of sounds or syllables in a word or of words in a sentence. Most commonly, it refers to the interchange of two or more contiguous sounds, known as adjacent metathesis.

philb:-
Aye its no fun being caught in the Dolomites, especially when climbing a barbed wire fence.
There is a rumour in our family that there is some Moghul blood within. They had a terrible way of execution. Simply place the victim lying face up on a tree stump and get an elephant to press down on them with one leg!!
rraphy:-
So me olde English teacher was wrong!
I must now 'fess up. I only speak 4 languages and French is not one of them.
Now Limericks can be great fun. The link below is from a long running radio show called I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. They had a section on Limericks in every second or third show. The show started in the early seventies and is still running today!
