I've been collecting for less than five years but it wasn't until recently that I've really narrowed my focus from just amassing stamps to collecting stamps. I enjoy collecting modern postal history covers. Mint stamps are cool and all, but I love slapping these suckers on envelopes and going to town. I usually drive around and find different post offices to mail myself covers--everything from the standard first rate $0.55, to flat rate $1.00, to flat rate with an extra ounce $1.20, etc., etc.,
For me collecting modern postal covers is rewarding because it is active, challenging and also circumvents the annoying process of trying to remove self-adhesives from covers without ruining the cancel.
If you like priority mail envelopes loaded with lots of stamps, just order some stamp mounts from Global Stamps. Every shipment I have received is as described above.

linus: It's nice to see another collector in our state. I learned recently, that despite Iowa having a small population, that we are ranked 10th in the country for state with the most post offices. I've yet to send any SASE envelopes to Polk County and collect post marks from your neck of the woods, but I think I will write one this week.
If you are interested in modern world wide covers, I would suggest joining the Cover Collectors Circuit Club (CCCC). A quick search will locate their website.
Members send nice covers to one another in a circuit format. So, you could potentially receive covers with modern stamps/cancels from pretty much anywhere in the world.
I was a member for several years and it makes you really excited to check your mail each day as you never know when an exotic cover will arrive.
Unfortunately I'm not aware of a similar club for US only collectors, but maybe someone else knows of something.
Welcome! No longer an Iowa resident, but grew up there, Denison, Crawford County, pretty much straight west of you. I still maintain Iowa-related collections of covers and cinderellas.
