(for those new to the hobby, SOTN means socked-on-the-nose)
I discovered this cool Newfoundland stamp in my collection today, and I thought I would share it with the club. The nose of the caribou seems to reach out of the Whitbourne cancellation triumphantly. I had to look up Whitbourne, Newfoundland, Canada and discovered this blog. If you like trains, check out this link:

re: Whitbourne Newfoundland SOTN Cancel
Beautiful cancellation! A quick note on that 1941 - 44 series, according to my wife's father quite a few years ago. When Canada joined Newfoundland ( his words ) in 1949 this series of stamps was given out free to anyone who wanted the set, by the Newfoundland post office in Grand Falls anyway. That included #253 - 266 and whatever else they had in stock. Another small point not connected to anything, I was just looking at an auction item and the stamp in the upper left was a Newfoundland #1, mint with the most perfect wide margins I have ever seen. Someone out the owns a gorgeous copy of that hard to find stamp, my copy pales in comparison!
Small town post office, not a whole lot of mail volume, mail clerk doing a good job that day, and throw in some "luck of the draw." The little things you discover in the stamps you accumulate make this hobby enjoyable to me, more so than buying the $100+ stamps.
Thanks for the kind words, everybody,
Linus
