Have I hit the jackpot or just wishful thinking on a cold damp afternoon sorting a pile of stamps. Meets all criteria of C4. Distance between 10 and first bar measures 4 1/2 mm. My concern is the last part of the description which states "Counterfeits exist" The 10 FR. looks a little dark but who knows? Reason for asking, Cats at $8,250
If I send to be expertized, where should I send? Any help would be appreciated
I looked at the image in Scott, Michel and the note in Gibbons about the surcharge. Scott does not show a period at the end of the surcharge, however, the other two catalogs indicate that there is a period. I would suspect Scott as being wrong. It wouldn't be the first time.
Comparing the font on the Michel image, the surcharge appears to be a little smaller than on your stamps, but the Michel image is not that great. Michel does warn of counterfeits just as Scott does.
With no notation about how the surcharge was applied, I would think that it was printed on the stamp. Check your stamps to see if the surcharge looks like it was handstamped. The C3 surcharge on your stamp is not on an even line with the horizontal plane of the stamp.
See what others say here, and take the stamps to a dealer to get a quick opinion.
My older Scott shows the period after the OP. Why would Scott show it years ago and then change to no period? Then again, why does Scott do a lot of the things it does?

re: France C4?
"I put under my microscope to see if the cancel was over or under the overprint, but could not tell one way or the other."
My thoughts exactly. It would seem on a cursory look of your images that the o/p is on top of the cancellation, but it needs microscope or magnifying inspection. Most C3 &C4 I have encountered are counterfeits.
