I looked at this some time ago and as best I could make out what it really does is match you with paint samples. There is an online database of the color references (from various paint manufacturers) and this connects to the nearest match. It also samples a very tiny spot. It did not seem useful to me but perhaps it has broader application than my interpretation led me to believe. If you are interested in this approach be aware that there are many other types out there (in a broad price range) if you look for them. That being said the main intent of all of them is to match paint and interior design colors. A true spectrometer is a very expensive piece of equipment and these little devices do not replicate the functions as i understand it. If there was a defined database of stamp color samples like there is for say pittsburgh paint maybe the nix would have more use.
