nlroberts/Nancy hit the nail on the head for the EASIEST solution.
However, if you are handy with simple tools, an internal replacement unit would be
the next easiest....with less components sitting around.
As was mentioned, both are economical solutions.

well the nice thing about the usb is its portability and if you have multiple devices as many folks do nowadays, its better than the internal. If you are really handy you can probably fix it. Its very easy to get the laser out of alignment tho and then you are hooped. I've tried fixing a few cd players with mixed results. The spring mechanism on the pc ones is not as tough as the ones on the old stereo models but they really aren't meant to be repaired. Its fun to experiment tho.
