I continue to remake my Germany collection. Herewith is another 'mystery' for your consideration. I have all the Michel listed shades of this issue. My question concerns the 10 and 20 mark values.

I have a ten mark issue with the wrong watermark. It has Scott number 127, quarter foils. I have no information. Do you?

Among my twenty mark issues is one with no watermark. Again, any information will be appreciated.

re: 1922 Munich Fair Issue

A weak watermark on the 20 Mark stamp might not be surprising at all, because according to my old Michel they used the old lozenge watermark for the two higher values, and the rolls in the paper mills might have been pretty much worn out by that time. AFAIK that was the reason for the introduction of the waffles watermark.

If the watermark on the 10 Mark stamp is indeed quatrefoils, it may be a new variety, or it could be printers' waste which got thrown out, and someone nicked it. I've never heard about watermark varieties in this issue before, but that doesn't mean anything. If you are sure that it is not lozenges, have the stamp expertized.

My Michel refers to the essays in differents colors and watermarks:

For the 20 mark stamp the watermark it's hard to see.I see the watermark only with liquid for watermark:

Looks like you have got the specialised catalog. Thanks for the scan and the extra info in it! So there are indeed essays in different colors and with different watermarks. Both stamps shown have the lozenges watermark all right, just in case anybody is wondering.

re: 1922 Munich Fair Issue

gerom, Thanks. I think that solves my mystery. Definitely no watermark on the 20 Mark stamp. But it explains the quarter foils watermark mystery. We have a very small stamp club here, but it meets on a day where I must work.

I retired from teaching some years ago, but I have a part time job to pay medical expenses. StampoRama is an excellent substitute for a local stamp club. Thanks for your help, and that of others who comment on my posts.

Hello BWSchulz,
You have luck for the small club.In my region they are not philatelic clubs and collectors.
I verified my 1922 Munich stamps, but I found only normal watermarks.
