Whilst putting the koala 4d stamps in a temporary stockbook, I came across this.
This is not post usage damage, as you can clearly see the postmark is across the area where some of the colour is missing.
I looked at it with a 10X jewellers lens and a stereo microscope and you can see the paper fibres clearly, and it is not thinned either.
Another interesting curiosity in the bulk lot that I bought. I still have a few thousand other values to put into a temporary stockbook, and what I am showing at present are those items that stick out like a sore thumb. Pity that it is such a messy pair.
Regards

The cancellation does seem to be placed over the missing colour. It could be possible that the stamp was damaged prior to it being used on a letter.
1. Stuck to the top sheet when printed.
2. Something at the owner’s residence stuck to it (being in a draw perhaps) prior to it being stuck to the letter, or after it was stuck on and left under something (when I was about 10, my father used to put a large telephone book onto a pile of envelopes, pick me up and plop me onto the book, telling me not to move until he came back, which was about an hour later – No, I was not a fat kid, but rather skinny really).
It is really hard to tell but I do not think it is a variety (but I could be wrong).
