In a batch of stamps I bought on eBay, there is what appears to be a mint imperforate version of this stamp, but I can find nothing in Scott's about an imperforate version. The edges are very smooth, i.e. no little indentations that might indicate that perforations had been trimmed off.

No, it was never issued as a imperf. There are both essays and proofs for this issue but they are pretty rare. Shown below are two proofs listed on eBay.
