With few exceptions i do not collect U.S. stamps...For some reason i like the 2 cent red Washington stamps of 1890-1903 on cover with nice cancels.I have lived my entire life in New York State minus 4 years when Uncle Sammy was showing a kid from the orchards and vinyards of the Hudson Valley some interesting places in the world. Until today i had never heard tell of Gaines N.Y. But postmarks do not lie .
I think there were billions of these produced. If you wanted, you could even create a specialized collection devoted to this stamp with the many hundreds (thousands?) of geometric and fancy cancels that were still being used when this stamp was in common use. You could even limit your collection to SOTN cancels and still accumulate a decent sized collection. A few individuals have devoted years to studying and collecting the fly specks found on this stamp. The stamp has intrigued more than a few collectors over the years!
