re: Random Portuguese Stamps Probably nothing spectacular. Let me know if you see anything rare.
May I suggest that you borrow or buy and use a set of Scott or Stanley-Gibbons stamp catalogues? While StampoRama’s members are exceptionally generous with heir time and knowledge, I don’t think any of us are keen to do your basic research. You would learn a great deal by looking up these stamps for yourself, whereas if you rely on other people to point out better/rare/unusual stamps you will learn very little. Most of the pleasure of collecting comes from the ferreting out of information about the stamps that interest us, not from asking other people do our “work” for us.

Roman,
Anton mentions a great resource that can be used totally free of charge.
Seeing that you've been on the site for less than a week, please don't be discouraged or turned off by any members who are less than helpful. Most, not all, but most will share knowledge and will do it with a cheerful spirit. Others, well, not so much.
All of those stamps are quite common and are of nominal value. Some neat stamps there though, for sure.

re: Random Portuguese Stamps Probably nothing spectacular. Let me know if you see anything rare.
I really am trying to find a way to say what I want to say without getting "crapped on" afterwards. I joined SoR about 3 months ago after being a stamp collector for a very long time. When I started collecting there was nothing like this forum, the internet didn't exist and the only way to collect stamps was to find everything out the hard way - by yourself using catalogs. Things have changed, now you go on line, join a forum like this, submit questions and have someone else instantly help you. It's an instant society now so you have to know what a certain stamp is ASAP, not the way we used to do it years ago! I was a teacher for 34 years and saw the change coming over the years. Kids didn't have the time or inclination to do things themselves, they needed the answers in the shortest period of time. Eventually v68w will learn the area he wants to collect and will become an expert and answer other people's questions. For now he/she is starting out and it's up to us, the so called experts, to help out. I still think the best way is to buy a catalog, or go on line, and try to figure it out yourself. And then when you are really stuck ask questions. But society isn't really like that anymore. For now, let's just give help and answer questions if we can!
re: Random Portuguese Stamps Probably nothing spectacular. Let me know if you see anything rare.
Harvey,
He has made 11 posts with the same question about stamps. The best way that we can help him is to point him in the right direction. If he isn't willing to do the most elementary research, he's not going to be a stamp collector long. And if he's new he will probably appreciate a heads up in where to look online for free, especially since a set of catalogues is a significant expense--I myself have a set of 2011s due to cost. As far as becoming an expert, that takes years, but in a few months with the right tools he'll be able to see at a glance whether his stamps are common or less common (for the most part). A few months with us telling him all the answers will get him nothing.

I just want to say thank you. for all the help. I know that buying a catalog is the right answer, at the same time, I cant buy the catalog for all of the different stamps I was trying to sort out last night. I do have a catalog for Russian/ Soviet stamps. Thank you.

re: Random Portuguese Stamps Probably nothing spectacular. Let me know if you see anything rare.
Jackie, I agree 100% - you have to have a catalog and do your own research. It just takes a while to figure that out. I find the most enjoyable part of the hobby is the research! I have a small envelope of stamps that I have no idea what they are and the easy way out would be to post pictures and have the experts here tell me what they are. But every once in a while I actually, usually through luck or research, get to decrease the envelope by one stamp, and then usually find another to put in the envelope to replace it. Remember though that most of us are old school and a lot of the newer collectors are not - they want us to do the hard work for them. A few of them might stay with the hobby, most will not. If we want stamp collecting to continue I think we have to tolerate both types of collector, bite our tongue, and answer the occasional question. My humble opinion which might be worth very little. The person who needs help now might not in the future!

re: Random Portuguese Stamps Probably nothing spectacular. Let me know if you see anything rare.
You can get older catalogs for virtually nothing. As a matter of fact, you can pick them for free at many stamp shows, or collectors will gladly send them to you (you pay the postage) when they get newer ones.
The info is generally adequate to organize a collection. The only thing that changes year to year is the stamp valuation of stamps (and I would urge you to use it only as a guide, and not exact, because it is not!!! ), and it will not have the latest stamps isued recently.
But many collectors are less interested in the modern stamps than the old ones anyway.
So get hold of an older set of catalog, or if interested in just a few countries, get them for those countries.
I usually cut up my older catalogs to paste some of the listings in my albums, to help me. I would gladly send you the countries that I dont't use. Most of my cut ups are issued in the years 2009-2012, so plenty good for what most collectors need. You can message me,

"If we want stamp collecting to continue"
Stamp collecting will continue - whether we 'want it to or not';
too many people have it in mind that if we don't "FIX" it, it will die.
Just like any other collecting interest, it will continue with or without us.

Now, that being said, I agree that v68w should acquire a set of catalogs; I also agree that he should use weblinks mentioned for stamp identification purposes - thats what they're there for.
And if he gets stumped, we will be happy to help!
But so far, all he has asked us is do we see anything valuable in his scans.
This does not sound like stamp collecting to me - it sounds like gold-mining.
I am MORE than willing to help identify stamps for others when the purpose is the actual identity of the stamp, but not when I am constantly asked to point out whether I see 'valuable stamps' among the images shown.
re: Random Portuguese Stamps Probably nothing spectacular. Let me know if you see anything rare.
V68W has noted he is a Russian stamp collector with Russian catalogs not the beloved Scott and he cannot borrow such reference books from his library.
So having pointed him in the direction of his local library, Stampworld or Colnect that should be sufficient.
If you feel his requests are probably overdone simply ignore the request or just let him know there is nothing of value.
I see nothing to suggest he is only "gold mining". These are stamps he knows nothing about and getting a catalog or even looking them up on a website for a few items is not overly feasible when he can get a quick answer here.
I am sure that going forwards his specific knowledge of Russian stamps will be valuable if he is still a member.

re: Random Portuguese Stamps Probably nothing spectacular. Let me know if you see anything rare.
I'm a long time Russia collector and as long as he stays away from BOB it's fairly straight forward. I cut my collection at 1985 and still have to use two albums - they really put out a "shed load" of stuff!! I doubt if you'll hear much from V68W for a while, people really gave him a hard time. I'm not finding fault with the members, I found his comments about "rarity" started to get on my nerves a little bit. I have very little sympathy for someone who doesn't make an effort to do their own research.

Really....
...a few???
If it were only a few it wouldn't even have been discussed - he posted OVER 200.
I own a set of Scott's; prior to having my own set, if I had trouble identifying stamps thru research online I would then post an image of A FEW stamps for help in identification.
As a matter of fact, I STILL ask for help now and then.
If you hadn't noticed, no one else is posting HUNDREDS of stamps and asking everyone if they "see anything valuable".
He was politely asked to try to ID on his own before posting, but continued on anyway.
If he took offense to being given advice on ID'ing stamps, so be it.

Exactly, in fact even when some trace of
justifiable impatience began to shine through,
it was couched in what I called when selling
expensive equipment, "Empathy Pillows."
The advice to seek catalogs or use some of
the many links available was simply good and
actually timely advice.
Those of us old enough to recall the now
somewhat distant past should remember visiting
a busy stamp dealer's shop and asking a question
or two and I am quite sure that even the most
patient dealer would have pointed to the Scott's
or Minkus catalog lying on the counter top with
similar advice, perhaps even opening the books
to a page and being told to read this or that item."
And then came the day when the dealer, who,
after all, needed time to make some profit would
glance over and ask if you, or I, wanted to
handle the query. I do, and it felt great.

re: Random Portuguese Stamps Probably nothing spectacular. Let me know if you see anything rare.
I use a 1961 2 volume Scott catalogue to do my basic inventory to find Scott numbers for my 1840-1949 world collection. I use the 1 and 2 volume sets of Michel for my specialized German collection and Stanley Gibbons catalogue for my specialized Russian collection alongside Scott.
To do quick sorting into years for countries, I use Stampworld - my best friend! Lol
Once a year I borrow up to date Scott catalogues from the library to update Scott numbers or when attempting to do serious research on early stamps that require a lot of minutiae details to get the exact number - always an awesome experience to discover the higher values due to slight differences in design. I list CV for stamps over $5. Everything under that I consider minimum value.
