re: Used German stamps
If I run into a stamp I can't identify the first thing I do is take whatever is written on the stamp and ask "Mr. Google". That quite often works, but only if there are English characters to work with. Once it's Russian or Asian script there is more of a problem so my next step is the stamp identifier in Scott's or I suppose there are stamp identifiers on line as well. I have a small envelope of stamps labeled G.O.K. (think about it!). When I get a camera or scanner set up again I'll give these guys a shot - there's a Hell of a lot of knowledge and experience in the members of StampoRama!!! I don't think I've seen them strike out yet. The thing I like is that most of them think of it as a hobby and don't automatically quote a value - unless you ask!
Thankyou to all the comments This is why I joined Stamporama to find out about stamps also to find the history of the stamps. I don't have a Scott book, if people tell me the value that is alright if not it is no problem. Even pictures of people or building on the stamps from other countries I wouldn't know I just ask what the picture is and I get alot of help from the people on this site. I have looked up Google about different stamps sometimes it has been very helpful but I do think old postage stamps from other countries can tell alot of stories whether it is the history or politics or anything else. Thankyou
