The stamp on this fdc was issued on June 23, 1971. What does this cancel on the cover commemorate? The cancel is dated January 13, 1972. It looks like an official post office cover. Is it an error or what or is it a cancel for a different stamp used by mistake?

re: Australian Antartic Territory FDC

Rather than the usual FDC cancellation from Sydney or Melbourne, this is the FDC actually in Davis Antarctica. These were typically later dates. You will also see Wilkes, Mawson and Macquarie Island cancels.

re: Australian Antartic Territory FDC

I was wondering if the Davis base was closed, and then re-opened on the postmarked date, but deWiki says that it was occupied continuously from 15 February 1969 on.

Cheers,
