Collecting King George VI from all countries, and King Edward VII and King George V from the West Indies. 26 Oct 2018 09:56:07am | re: Tonga Inverted Watermark
The Stanley Gibbons 2013 Catalogue indicated that the multiple tortoise watermark is found with the head pointing all upright or all downward if inverted. Sideways watermarks show the heads pointing both upright and downward. Stamps with the inverted watermark (all downward) are valued the same as the sideways watermark.
The used 2-1/2d value you have pictured is valued at about £1.60 for an upright watermark and £1.40 for a sideways watermark. Sorry it is not a windfall, but it does make an interesting study looking for the various watermark alternatives.

Thanks for the info.
I know that some inverted watermarks are quite common and others can be rarer. I couldn't find any mention in my catalogues.
I did not expect to retire on the value of this one stamp!
