General Philatelic/Supplies, Literature & Software : Scott Catalog for the world - A to Z.

Hi.
A friend in Yangoon, Myanmar has asked me if I can find for him Scott catalog for the world. I looked at Amazon and 2018 version is 100's of USD for the A-Z. I am wondering if anyone could suggest if or where I could find second hand ones? Perhaps 2-3 years old would suffice. Attached is his current catalog.
Thanks and regards, Dusty.

Check on postage costs to Myanmar - the cost may exceed the cost of the catalogs depending on where they are being shipped from. It appears that there may be limited options (or I am entering information wrong - quite possible). Still - it will not be cheap.

Scott also has on-line versions of their catalogs which are a little cheaper.

Hi Webpaper.
Thanks for the reply. The catalogs could be posted to a address I have in the US, and it goes with other supplies to my company in Thailand. I.e. I can forward the catalogs to my friend in Myanmar.

Dakota, my friend wants a the real deal. The internet in Myanmar is not quite up to our standards.

Thanks again, Dusty.

LOL, Phil. There were MANY dealers who swore that they would never use another Scott catalog other than the 1988s. A local dealer here also said that. He's using 2019 editions, by the way.

The bottom dropped out of the stamp market in 1989 at least as far as Scott is concerned.
Anyone using the 1988 catalog afterwards was taking a huge mark-up. It still has not caught up. For the last many years the classic world specialized 1840-1940 has only been
printed in hardback and is rather expensive. I'd look for one 5 years or older. Amazon has the best deals on all Scott Catalogs.

I've been out of the hospital for 10 days now without any relapses, hopefully I am done with this ordeal.

I Spilled something on my key board a couple months ago and it had been driving me nuts ever since having to retype most things over again. I guess I'll have to break down and buy a new one (this was a very nice one and was only about a month old). Does any one have any
magic tricks on leaning this one. I've removed all the afflicted keys several times and cleaned them but that hasn't helped?

Hi Mitch,
Glad to hear you are doing better.

You can wash your keyboard in the dishwasher, but be aware of several things. Do not use any soap or dishwashing liquids, just use the hot water cycle. You MUST allow the keyboard to completely dry before powering it back up (typically 36-48 hours in a RH of less than 65%).

Glad to know you are doing better Mitch. We missed you here.
I am afraid that water and electronics don't mix! My advice: Get a new keyboard.
At least it was not the whole computer, as my wife recently killed one by setting her laptop on top of a small water spill.... and the water oozed into it, as if sucked by a wick....! You don't even have to spill water on it!
I have learned to never put my coffee cup. water glass or water bottle anywhere near any electronics, even if it is advertised as water resistant!

re: Scott Catalog for the world - A to Z.

Ralph,
My experience includes 25 years of being involved in both the designing and manufacturing PCBs (printed circuit boards)as VP of Engineering and VP of Manufacturing. We had several high speed surface mount and through holes PCB lines on the manufacturing floor as shown below.

Note that virtually every PCB that was ever produced before 2001 was put into a dishwasher after being manufactured and before they were tested. This was because before 2001 was manufacturers use a solder and solder paste that needed to be washed off after the PCB had been manufactured. After that date, most manufacturers switched to ‘no clean solder’. If you visited a large PCB manufacturer back then, they would have 40-50 dishwashers lined up just to clean the PCBs.

So yes, you can safely put your keyboard in the dish washer. Obviously it has to be dry before applying power. Many people use a hair dryer to dry but I take no chances and let them air dry for 2 days.

But it is a myth that electronics and water do not mix...the truth is that power and water do not mix.

In a 300 plus computer office spills on keyboards happen often.... SOP was a hot water spray, shake out and a couple of ays of drying........ never a problem.

I can vouch for Don's method and Carol's, too;

I have done both and had success at each.

re: Scott Catalog for the world - A to Z.

Thanks for the welcome backs. It's going to take me awhile to get back into collector mode.
I've been checking the few auction places I use and over the last several months I just have not found anything I need, care about or can afford. Looks like about the only thing I can do now is make new pages for the newer stamps I have got in the last many months but have not got around to mounting as of yet.
