Whitewalls? Easy. They disappeared because they sucked. I can attest to this after spending countless hours trying to keep them clean. Brake dust, yellowing. Yuck. Typically the wide whitewalls were also found on bias ply tires; remember how bad they made a car handle? Or how about the flat spots the bias ply would get after the car sat for a while? You would run down the road with vibrations until the tire got some heat in them.
So they disappeared along with vacuum wipers. Nothing like pulling a big hill and having your windshield wipers slow to a crawl in a hard rain. Yikes. Some things deserve to disappear.
Whatever happened to history and civics in schools?
Whatever happened to saving for a rainy day?
Whatever happened to Netscape?
Whatever happened to rock candy?

"Whatever happened to rock candy?"
Burl Ives nicked it all for his big mountain.
"Whatever happened to saving for a rainy day?"
In England the rainy days came too often, we could never save fast enough.

I saw some wooden fruit at a second hand store, but easily resisted any temptation to take them home.
Great line from a newish TV ad: Dennis Quaid, about to take a bite, being cautioned:
"That's a prop apple."
Cheers,

"...that apple was made for a wooden Eve"
Whatever happened to all the great artists when they did Adam and Eve renditions? In other words, why are Adam and Eve always depicted with belly buttons!?! How can that be!?!

"Whatever happened to...the days when eBay did NOT charge sellers commission on shipping costs?"
Unfortunately far too many sellers abused it by selling expensive items for a nominal amount and then making up the actual price in shipping.
For example I remember purchasing a synch cable for a handheld device on eBay, sale price was 99c, shipping was something like $25.

@ Randy, & Ernie;
I miss drive ins also. My first one was Frankenstein, and scared us kids to nightmares. I still love scary movies, with a good plot line.
@ Johnny Rockets;
I never could master those danged yo-yos, but I'm fascinated by planetary yo-yo orbits and other weird space stuff.
Still just sortin....

Austin had several drive in theaters. Perhaps the most notorious was the "Rebel Drive-In" that stood from 1979 to 1988 in South Austin. What was so notorious about it? It showed explicit adult movies. It was torn down and became a business park.

They use a lot of real estate and the value of the land makes them a better investment for something else as cities grow outward. Also property taxes usually rise with the land value so ongoing costs rise.
