I am heading to Vientiane in Laos this coming week. I tried searching for any members, but Laos is not listed. Anyone here know of any fellow members in or around Vientiane?
Regards, Dusty.
I was in Vientiane, the capital, just over two years ago. The one stamp shop was no longer there, but a visit to the GPO is worthwhile. I was told last year it was the same as when I was there so you may be lucky. There is a philatelic counter with some female clerks. Look through what they have on the counter as they have been selling older stock off. Sometimes they have good material in boxes under the counter so be pleasant to the girls. They seem a bit picky who they sell it to;-)
Good luck
Danny
p.s. If you are crossing over from Nong Khai, Thailand I'm afraid there isn't much philatelic there either. In Vientiane do ask at the market across the road from the GPO as it seems there is sometimes someone selling stamps there.
Thanks for the tip Danny. I am flying in so not going to Nongkai. I will dress the best I can and put on the charm for the girls at the GPO. See if they have any early stuff, but pretty sure anything before the communist takeover would have been deemed a national threat and destroyed.
Hi all.
Thanks for the tip DannyS. Made it to Vientiane and visited the main post office. Bought quite a few stamps. I think all of any value have been sold long ago, but still some nice issues from 1957 onwards.
Prices similar to what one can get on Delcamp, but still fun to spend about 100$ and get the beginning of a collection going.
Greetings from Vientiane.
Dusty.
