Note the date on that card: 1949. The population is much higher than 7.5 million. Also, jovial (for some; serious for others) comments here say that everything south of Interstate 10 has been defacto returned to Mexico.
Interesting how political affiliations have flipped 180 degrees since 1949. The "Republican Retreat" would now, of course, be properly known as the "Democratic Retreat". But, we live today in the 'post-Dixiecrat' era...
I think it was the late 1980's when I was still living in Dallas that the state decided to add the state motto to the license plates and we all thought, "OK". Then they showed an artists rendering in the Dallas Morning News and everyone I know said, "What the ..." It had "The Friendship State" and we were all thinking "The Lone Star State". Some politician said they voted on that as the motto years ago and we said we don't give a rip WHAT you passed in the dead of the night. Texas was, and IS, the LONE STAR STATE!!! So they said, "No motto!" and we said "Fine!"
A few years later, Texas plates were sporting "The Lone Star State". The heck with "Don't mess with Texas."
Don't mess with Texans!
