And fortunately, the non-machineable surcharge and the 2nd ounce for 1st class are both the same rate, so you can also use these stamps to pay a regular 2-ounce letter (that's machineable, i.e, bends normally).

I always thought of machining as something one does with a lathe or milling machine, which would lead one to believe that non-machinable would apply to material which is beyond the capability of the machine.
So Non-Machineable (notice the extra 'e') strikes me as a rather contrived term for mail that cannot be sorted automatically.
Among the free albums one can download from http://www.thestampweb.com/albums.html (near the bottom of the page), is a USA Non-Machineable album albeit actually only a single page, it does contain colour images of the other US Non-Machineable surcharge stamps for those who are interested.
