09:24:54pm | Tonight I will share a little cover from my collection that I bought at a stamp shop in the Chicago suburbs many years ago. The front shows a cancellation from Haiphong, Tonkin, Indo-China with a date of 10 October 1919 and the back shows it passed through Hong Kong on 14 October 1916. How can that be? It appears that one of the two post offices had placed the "6" in their cancelling device upside down, which was not uncommon. I think the Hong Kong cancel is probably correct on the date, but only speculation on my part. The stamps are Scott #44 issued in 1907, so either date is possible.

An upside-down '6' is a very likely explanation, though it is more common in the day or month than in the year.
Much more important is the "10-10", as this cancel came on either the fifth or eighth anniversary of the start of the Wuchang Uprising, which led to the founding of the Chinese Republic.
Finding an East Asian cover with any "10-10" cancel will always bring good luck, and a cover so close to the event is a very special find, indeed!

ikeyPikey - An angle I was not aware of... the "10-10" cancel. I had to read up on the Wuchang Uprising, and now I wish the year date was 1911!
