I wonder if someone during the last 116 years had tried to make some money?

The questioned stamp is Switzerland standing Helvetia 25 centime blue. I found in a row of stamps one that looked like it had granite paper = €12 in cat value. Wow, great find, I though. But hm, something was not right.

The engraving was the old type, with the right FRANCO leaning right, not left as it supposed to do. And the watermark was wrong.

Frontside.

Backside with the dubious granite paper.

Then I decided to clean the stamp in water, and the backside changed to clean white.

Michel 67 or 67D depending on the watermark (which I have to learn the difference to tell) €= 1
It was not Michel 89, still on want lHappyist

re: Switzerland - fake!

I might be a bit thick here but why would someone go to a lot of trouble to fake a 12 euro value stamp?

It is more likely to be a case of mistaken identity ( looking at the original condition quite likely ! ) or an over-optimistic opinion. At worst a deliberate misdescription.
