Europe/Other : austria place names

I am looking for a website which enables me to find a place name(s) using the end of the name rather than the beginning.

I have a part postmark which ends "dlberg" with a postcode ending (1?)05. I calculate that the name is 17 or 18 characters long.

I have seen a website which allows you to find possible names in "reverse" alphabetical order using the letters of the names backwards. However I am sure that this was for a country other than Austria. I have done a postcode search using the various postcodes ending 105 without success - and I have done a search using various Wikipedia and other sites. Unfortunately many sites only reference the largest towns.

I have spent several hours on this quest, and it is driving me bananas. I have forgotten why I was looking for this information in the first place but my inability to find out is beginning to obsess me. Help.

re: austria place names

Hi Malcolm,

I use the US geonames service for this kind of thing:

http://geonames.nga.mil/namesgaz/

Searching for placenames ending in "dlberg" gave me eight inhabited places in Austria:

Oberradlberg
Rindlberg (two instances)
Schiedlberg
Schindlberg
Stadlberg
Steindlberg
Unterradlberg

Two of these are districts in St Pölten and they both have the postcode 3105: Oberradlberg (12 letters) and Unterradlberg (13 letters).

Thanks for that - I will investigate that site.

It really is a pain when you just know that what you have leads to a positive ID ,but you just can't work out how to get there !

The spacing of the letters in relation to the position of the postcode indicates that it must be the longer name.

Thamks again.

Malcolm
