Europe/Great Britain : GB: Foreign Cancellations

I'm ever-vigilant for foreign cancellations on GB stamps from the 1860s-1870s, specifically C51 (St Thomas), C60 (La GuairĂ¡), and D26 (Spanish packet). The C51s come up pretty regularly, but I really don't want to pay more than $10 for them. Here's one I got recently, for $9, including shipping:

Centering kinda sux, but these issues are hard-to-find VF, and I'm mainly interesting in documenting the cancellation, not the stamp. This cancellation is positioned so that it allows me to say it's a Type II (1869), not a Type III, which has a CDS to the immediate left of the "C51".

Here's a nice C60 with the earlier Type I (1865) style cancellation that sold a few days ago for $67:

Too rich for my blood, but it's the only one I've ever seen for sale, after about 3 months of watching. And, I've never seen a D26. On cover, these cancellations go for several $hundred.

Anyway, I would really LOVE to score a bulk lot of GB foreign cancellations to go through and research...

The Caribbean packet mail system fascinates me!

I see your quest for C51 (Danish West Indies) goes on. They do get a little pricey don't they. I finally gave up and slapped mine in my Great Britain collection, but I always know what I have when I see the C51. By "them," I mean all two of them.

Cheers!

re: GB: Foreign Cancellations

Ya, I'm up to TWO C51s myself, grand total.

I'd love to make that TWENTY-TWO. My goal is to have an example of each of the three cancellations on all of the GB issues that they could have been applied to. That's a tall order, and that's what has me seeking a bulk lot. Still, I think Caribbean foreign cancels are MUCH more rare than say, Malta, or Gibraltar, important British outposts in the 19th century...

Ah, the QUEST!

re: GB: Foreign Cancellations

Here's one I've been watching all week:

Centering as usual for this issue, but it bears the early C61 cancellation, used in Puerto Rico. Seldom seen. Started at GBP 0.99, now up to GBP 38, with a few hours left. Ugh. I can't afford to build a comprehensive collection at those prices, even if I'm only focusing on the Caribbean! REALLY want to score a large bulk lot of GB foreign cancellations to sort through!

Winedrinker, you in?

It's always a pleasure to find these misidentified. I've been keeping my eyes peeled, and I have a dozen or so Constantinople, Smyrna and Beyrout cancels on GB to sell (C, F87 and G06). PM me if interested in anything

re: GB: Foreign Cancellations

Just landed this beauty the other day:

Image Not Found

It's a fairly early usage, 1865. And a very nicely centered cancellation on a pair that is, itself, nicely centered.

This 'motif' is currently common in the marketplace. Looks like this cover might have something to interpret on the backside. Stay tuned!

Just a very nice addition to my colonial Caribbean collection.

For clarification, this cover originated in the Danish West Indies, franked with British stamps, cancelled in St. Thomas by British authorities, received in London and Calais, France. I can probably trace the vessel which carried this letter...

I guess that is one way of floating your boat.

Still on the hunt for GB used abroad or foreign cancellations, focusing on the Caribbean.
Here's one that sold yesterday:

...for $154.05!!!!
C81 is the numeral assigned to Bahia, Brazil.
Needless to say, I was NOT the winning bidder. Gosh, collectors seem to clamoring for these.
Malta (A25) and Gibraltar (A26) seem to be the most common. And, there seems to be some variation in cancelling devices, as well as early and late styles. The one shown above is a later style.

Would like to build a nice collection, but can't afford to at those prices. I need to find a bulk lot to sort through...
