Hi! New member here, but have been reading and collecting for a couple of months now. Recently, in between pictorial postmarks, I have become interested in the PO-Specific hand cancels. Lately, I have received a few requests back that the postmaster claims that they cannot do what I have asked. Is there somewhere in the DMM that documents their ability to cancel a stamp on an envelope for a collection?
One response from the Lighthouse Point, FL station:
"Hello, Sorry we are unable to postmark your envelope. You need to be present and hand over the envelope to be mailed in order for your letter to have a postmark. Thank you, LHP Post Office"
Another from the Bronx, NY Station:
Was returned to sender with a note that they "Can not do it."
One from the Bethel, NY post office came back with no note or explanation at all. I have had a great deal of success with this, but wondered what position others had taken with this.
Read some of my threads about my pursuit of New Jersey postmarks. In my travels I’ve had great clerks who have immediately given me nice cancels, some even cleaned the cancel device!
On the other end I’ve had a lot of resistance from unknowing clerks to those who get quite rude accusing me of wanting the cancel hand back to commit some kind of fraud.
I’ve learned to carry a paper copy of the regulations, and to be very friendly! Still I’ve had clerks actually accuse me of forging the. document! It makes collecting a challenge for sure!
