Hi Poodle_mum;

Tell us more about it after you've given it a good test drive.

What is it's cost, and who makes this new gadget? Will it work on any computer operating system?

If you can provide a brand name and model # we can look up the techno geek stuff for ourselves.

Thank you for telling us and for the images.

Just sortin'....

re: Magnifier

It's amazing. The first picture is what someone with full sight could see under a good magnifier. I can read the second picture and with the third picture I can even see details of stamps. I have another magnifier for my stamps that connects to my 32" tv and shows everything in colour. Now I can put this one up high and see the fine details of errors on stamps - all the things I've never seen before.

But being able to see a stamp catalogue is fantastic. The first thing I said to my friend was "now I'll be able to see a stamp catalogue!" She shook her head and said "all you think about is stamps!" Lol

I always get a good laugh when people ask what my hobbies are and I tell them stamp collecting. They get this puzzled look on their faces and sputter out "how can you collect stamps when you're blind?" Lol

re: Magnifier

You'd have to get it through a place such as Maxi Aids that sell magnification systems for people with low vision or legally blind. You don't need to have a vision problem to purchase from them. They have some awesome magnification systems. It just plugs into the wall, put your book or whatever on the tray, adjust the contrast and move the tray up and down/ side to side to see. The big button on the bottom adjusts the magnification. This one is an older one (so it's about 35lbs) but these kind all work the same way. The maximum print size is about 3" high.

My computer has a special program that will magnify things quite a bit. I can access the internet on it projected to my 32" tv up to 5". But I need to scan stuff if I want to read a letter or something. This way I just plug it in, stick the book on the tray and voila!

I tried it out with a stamp and it was really cool to see the dots and lines that are on a stamp design. I've never seen them before.

The greatest thing about it is I don't have to depend on friends who know nothing about stamps to try to read a catalogue. I can see the catalogue myself now!!!!

re: Magnifier

Wonderful tool! My roommate from college used to read with a magnifying glass and later learned to drive using telescopic lenses and was the first person licensed in the state with them. He majored in accounting and eventually became a computer programmer including a multi-year stint as a systems programmer on IBM mainframes.

During the early 1990's I had the opportunity to setup two generations of Kurzweil low vision book reading equipment for two new students who were legally blind but could function with the equipment on our campus which was working very hard at the time to resolve issues with handicap accessibility. One student worked for a period of time as a student worker for the campus police working as a dispatcher monitoring phones and providing communications to officers around the campus.

I am amazed at the image quality for your unit! Congratulations!

Here is a link to the new colour version. They have them in the US as well.

Here's a link for powerful magnifiers that are much cheaper and easy to use. You can follow the links to portables and handhelds as well.

Since mine was a $4000 gift, I don't care that it's black and white. I can see a catalogue - I'm a happy camper!

Hi Everyone;

@ bobgggg;

Oh, did you get one of those draft beer glass/magnifier thingies too. Mine has a coaster stuck to the bottom. As soon as I soak it off, I'll try mine out and get right back to you all with my review. Thinking

Mine also came with a six-pack of long necks from six different nations, but she drank four of them, and I only got to have two. She said that I look a lot better after four beers tho....

I heard that the really THICK beer bugs have rather thick lens shaped bottoms that a very high magnification tho.... Rolling On The Floor Laughing
