I learned something new about our auction images today, and those of you who show pictures of entire stockcards, or uncropped stamp images should take heed.

Also, here's a tip for buyers who are buying from such listings.

It turns out that the formatting for the auction pages automatically reduces images to a width of 800 pixels, if they are wider than that. (I could not find this documented in any of the auction tips or FAQs -- not saying it's not there, just that I did not find it when I went looking for it.)

Since many of these "stockcard" images are wider than that, this effectively reduces the size of the stamp image, for the sake of "waste space". Something you should be aware of if you are one of these sellers. Cropping is good! That way your buyers get to see what you actually uploaded.

However, for buyers in the know, all is not lost. If you suspect that an image is using the maximum allowed 800px and has been reduced, try "right-clicking" on it. In the resulting menu, select "open image in a new tab" (that's a Google Chrome prompt, other browsers may use different terms). It will open in a new tab, and will be the original size that was uploaded (assuming your screen is big enough).

Thanks Roy- I'm surprised the system will let people upload anything larger than that. I was getting the "image too large" messages so I figured out that I use the 640 wide for images of covers. That's a nice image size on the message boards.

Thanks Roy, I too get the message that the image is too large and I found that shooting at 300dpi and then reducing to 45% any image that was bigger than 250kb seemed to give me large enough images, but not so large that it forced me to scroll left/right to see the whole thing.
